Sophia - Secrétaire, Writing Bureau & Bookcase

£2,990.00 (Sold out)

Meet Sophia – a stunning hand painted antique mahogany secrétaire dated early 1900s with a glass fronted bookcase sitting upon a writing bureau.

Her name is traditional Italian and it was the Italy of old - the Baroque period - that inspired the palette for this piece: hand-mixed burnt sienna coloured paint has been used on the interior of the bookcase, the bureau and the drawers and a rich, deep black paint has been used on the exterior.

Clementene used her signature brush technique to add texture to the paint, which has been lightly distressed to create a natural, weathered patina. The exterior has been treated to several coats of black wax, whilst the interior has been sealed with clear wax.

Sophia required a lot of restoration work prior to painting, including a new black gilt-tooled leather inlay which has been fitted to the desk top lid. Gold leaf gilding has been used to highlight the features, including the beautiful curved swan’s neck cornice.  New black brushed felt has been fitted to the desk lid rests.

For that extra special touch, for each of the three antique keys, Clementene handmade bespoke multi-coloured tassels (variations of Florentine malachite copper green) from Italian 100% cotton thread.

Sophia has the classic curved cabriole legs. She has three fitted shelves within the bookcase sitting behind two glazed doors. Inside the writing bureau are pigeon holes and a pair of drawers.

An absolutely stunning and unique piece which will look ideal in a study, a living room, an entrance hall or even a bedroom – anywhere where one may feel inspired to put pen to paper.

All of Clementene's painted furniture is lovingly restored and fit for purpose. Please note that some pieces may have suffered a few knocks and scrapes before it came to Clementenes. After all, it’s what gives the furniture its personality and charm. Clementene repairs what needs repairing, but as for any little imperfections she embraces these and will often highlight them as a feature. Clementene will always do her best to show sizeable bumps (if any) in her photographs. Although she hopes that if you’ve come this far, you’ll welcome the unique character of each piece as much as she does!
